Just about every fossil you’ve ever seen - from the humblest ancient seashells to the grandest dinosaurs - required some degree of preparation. Despite what you see in the movies, fossils don’t come ready-made out of the ground. It takes some elbow grease, not to mention technical skill, to extract these fragments of prehistory from solid rock.
